Samuel Cunard, a merchant of Halifax, had a line of sailing packets between that port and Eng- land ; they were not famous for speed, and the en- terprising Cunard thought and dreamed of repla- cing them by steamers. In 1838 he went to Eng- land with the view of carrying out his plans, and obtained an introduction to David Napier, the cele- brated marine engineer. Cunard gave an order for the building of four steamers of 800 tons each ; Napier recommended larger ships, and it was finally agreed... to make them of about 1,200 tons burthen and 440-horse power. But this required more money than Cunard could command at the time, and he decided to form a company. THE CUNARD COMPANY. 34 1 There had formerly been two rival lines of coast- ing steamers between Liverpool and Glasgow, one owned by the Messrs. Maclver of Liverpool, and the other by Messrs. Burns of Glasgow. After years of keen competition these firms were amalga- mated, and the combined concern was very pros- perous when Cunard appeared with his proposal to form a steamship company for navigating the At- lantic.
