A. N old writer gives a somewhat quaint description of S. Elizabeth's attire, which from poverty seems to have assumed something of the grotesque. The grey habit was much worn out, and as it does not seem to have entered the Duchess's mind to procure a new one, she tried to remedy the evil by patching it here and there with pieces of different coloured cloths ; she insisted upon doing this herself, and as she was anything but a skilful workwoman, in fact knew nothing at all about the management... of her needle, the effect of the many colours filling up the holes which had been produced by rents or burning was somewhat peculiar. Her cloak, which was of the same material as her dress, had shrunk with the frequent exposure to rain, and in order to lengthen it she added on a piece of a totally different colour. She seemed to see nothing peculiar in all this ; her extreme simplicity and total self-forgetfulness had always been her great charm, and continued to be so to the end ; men might laugh and jeer at her if they pleased ; once she had cared for such things ; now they had no power to hurt her.
