Gratian a Brief, appointing him Apostolic Visitor to the mitigated branch of the Order in Andalusia, and superior of the discalced in Andalusia and Castile. The saint learned, not without dread, of the first of these two appointments ; but to oppose the king and Nuncio was impossible, and, God helping, she believed that Fr. Gratian was capable of doing much good among the friars of the Observance. ...She begins her efforts at once amongst these at Seville, in order to smooth the way for the young Visitor. " I had a visit yesterday, " she writes to Fr. Gratian, "from the A BURNING QUESTION 423 provincial of the Observance, and soon after the prior arrived. ... I found them all determined to obey you, and to second you in the reform of abuses, pro- vided in other matters you do not go too fast. I assured them that you would go to work gently, knowing you as I do. I hope by the grace of God all will prosper if you begin quietly, reverend father, with prudence, and do not expect to accomplish all in a day.
