In 1695 Godolphin's name became associated with an institution which was destined to a magnificent and beneficent future. William III., adopting the wishes of Queen Mary, decided upon converting Greenwich Palace into a hospital for worn-out seamen. Wren was called on to enlarge and embellish the palace, and a subscription list was opened for its benefit upon which the names of the king and the chief nobility we...re immediately placed.
