When the time came, their advanced troops entirely failed to notice that the trenches close in front of them had been vacated. They were capable of carrying 500 men as a full load, although about 400 was more usual on this occasion. When it... came to be a question of shipping men and guns from impro- vised jetties in a rising sea, they proved extremely serviceable ; they had been nicknamed ' beetles ' by the troops, owing to the derricks that supported their gang-boards resembling antennae. A small pier had been constructed at Gully Beach, the point from which the last detachments of the 13th Division to hold the front line trenches were to put off ; the strength of these last detachments, together with divisional headquarters and some minor details, came to 645 of all ranks.
