HONOURS OF VICTORY. 91 Taou-kwang was prompted by flatterers to g'ive to his reig-n a more hig'h-sounding title on account of this victory; but he was too sensible to follow such advice. On the con- trary^ he proceeded to the temple of his ances- tors, and there paid homage ; for to their propitious influence he ascribed his success.
His adopted mother also received her share of praise; and he shewed peculiar honour to his uncle, a man far advanced in years.
