But further it is said, that because the state of mind for seeing visions was developed in the case of Paul when he saw the Lord, this appearance of Christ was nothing but a figment of his inner life, although the biblical idea of vision infinitely surpasses this caricature ; to say nothing of the idea of such a vision in which the state of mind for seeing visions is to be considered as only the medium through which a heavenly appearance shows itself.^ And finally, because Paul's vision must have been a mere illu- sion, so also must have been the experiences of all the disciples in which they thought they saw the Lord.
