But as the system settled down into greater clearness there is no longer any possibility of concealing that anthropo morphism which the whole, with all its greatness of achievement, involved. It was bound to seem especially dangerous just because it was hidden, and men could not permanently fail to notice that a great deal of what was here offered as ex planation was nothing more than an image and similitude.
At the same time the whole was bound to be rejected because felt as an intolerable min...gling of fact and image, as well as a transference to objects of what is merel y subjective. This in particular was the case at the beginning of the modern period with THE PROBLEM OF TRUTH 289 Scholasticism , and all the more because the latter held fast to the forms of Aristotle with- out being able to retain his spirit and the inner connections of his thought. But already 1 in antiquity the increasing sever ance of man from thg world drove the struggle for truth beyond the classical solution and compelled it to seek new paths.
