The figure also of St. Peter assists wonderfully in giving harmony to the picture, to which the sober colour of the dresses of St Francis and St Antony also contributes. But what is most wonderful of all, and where the flesh is executed most naturally, is the figure of St Sebastian,
... a most beautiful young man, naked^ and who is heroically sustaining the extreme pains of approaching death. The skilful artist, by this method xxf giving a greater degree of beauty to those whom he wished to represent in a moment of suffering, rendered the spec- tator's sentiment of commiseration the more acute, as the delicacy and loveliness of that body shows it to be less capable of supporting the bitterness of its torments.
This naked figure alone would be sufficient to give the lie to those people, who allowing Titian the palm of colouring, deny him that of design ; an old calumny, which unhappily has kept ground to this day, because, supported by a not very intelligible expression of Vasari,* • " Fine colouring," wrote Ludovico Dolce to M.
