This is due undoubtedly to the influence of Buchanan, the founder of modern sacred poetry. His themes were borrowed, and his method was followed by nearly all his successors. Amongst THE LITEEATUKE OF THE SCOTTISH GAEL 41 the works of God in providence and grace he moves softly and solemnly, delicately tracing as he proceeds the unfold- ing of the Divine purposes, interpreting their meaning, and causing his picture to glow with his own warm and earnest mysticism. As if afraid of the vagaries of the imagination, he proceeds to express his own experience in this striking description and definition : — ' She, flying and soaring Like a bird in the skies, , Spurns the restraining Of her fleshly desires.
