Thus frustrated in his expectation of assis- tance from the fleet, he ordered Generals Chandler's and Winder's brigades to follow the enemy on the lake road, 137 while ammunition and provisions were transported in batteaux to the head of the lake. These brigades marched, and having arrived within a few miles of the enemy's camp late in the afternoon, it was thought most prudent to wait and make the attack on the following morning.
