The leaves of the gate were secured by bolts and also by bars of wood, bronze, or iron, passing into sockets in the posts of the gate. Samson delivered himself from the ambush laid by the Philistines "in the gate of the city" by tearing away the two leaves of the door, the gateposts and the fastening bar, and bearing them on his shoulders to the top of a hill that is before Hebron.
