The axiomatic qualities of the social nature or rather of the individual, as we know him in con- trast with the community of which he is part, are defined by Carey — a too much neglected authority — as (i) the impulse to association up to a definite degree, (2) the estimate placed on individuality, (3) the sense of responsibility, and (4) the capacity for progress.
