In the winter of i6o7-'o8, he was captured by the Indians, but after a short captivity was permitted to return to Jamestown. By the summer of 1608, Smith and Scrivener succeeded in deposing the only other member of the Virginia Council, and Smith became its president, in which office he remained for about a year. In September of 1609, Smith was severely wounded by the explosion of a bag of gunpowder, and returned to England. Five years later he made a voyage to the New England coast. Captain Sm...ith wrote a number of works relating to America. Smith died in 1631, and was buried in St. Sepulchre's Church, London. L^iptcufi/ QMyrtn/ QJ^mMv. St. Sepulchre's Church, located at the west end of Newgate Street, was built in the 15th century. The body of the church, however, was burned during the great fire of 1666. It has several times been repaired and restored, and in 1 878-1 880, the entire body of the church was re- stored under Mr. Robert Billing, architect. The church is Gothic throughout.
