The various salts in the sea sparkled like living gems ; sea-plants extended their broad arms, filled with hydrogenous life, and em- braced the joy of existence ; the deep valleys and dim-lit ravines, through which old ocean unceasingly flows, were peopled with countless minute animals — all permeated and pulsating with the spirit of Nature ; while the sides of ocean-mountains — far, far be- neath the high pathway of travel and human commerce — seemed literally studded with emeralds, diamonds, gold, silver, pearls, and sparkling gems, beyond computation.
