...ention was held in a large building on Lake street, called the "Wigwam," put up for the purpose. As soon as the doors were opened, the entire body of the Wigwam was solidly packed with men, the galleries be- ing equally packed with ladies. There were not less than ten thousand persons in the building, while an immense crowd were unable to get inside.
Governor E. D. Morgan, of New York, Chairman of the National Republican Committee, called the Con- vention to order, read the call, and delivered the follow- ing address: "Usage has made it my duty to take the preliminary step toward organizing the Convention — a Convention upon the proceedings of which, permit me to say, the most momentous results are depending.
