Our standards of length, area, capacity, and weight are as well defined as those of the metric system. They are uniform all over the country. Most of them are the same in Great Britain and her colonies. The Indian hath is 18 British inches. The Russian duim is the same length as the British inch; the verschok is If inches, the archin 28 inches ; the sagine is 7 feet, and the verst is 3,500 feet. The fingers were anciently used as a measure of length as well as to enumerate by, and it is just as... natural, and therefore scientific, to measure by finger breadths, or a near approximation thereto, as it is to enumerate by tens, because we have 10 fingers to count with. The ancient finger breadth was about 0.91 of an inch in length, and the inch is so wrought into our natures and our needs in some indus- tries that it can not be eradicated. It is a good measure of length ; far superior to the centimeter, which is too small a unit for ordinary purposes. By the mechanic it is usually divided into one-half, one- Tourth, one-eighth, one-sixteenth, and sometimes into one thirty- second.
