These changes have become so well known that when masses of cells of higher animals exhibit similar variations of form they are called amce- boids. Among the amceboids are the leucocytes, or white corpuscles of the human blood. It is because the Amoeba changes its shape so often and assumes so many varieties of form t...hat it was named Proteus animalcule by Rozel von Rosenhof, who dis- covered it in 1755. In Greek mythology, Proteus was an " old man of the sea, " who looked after the seal flocks of Neptune. He had a great reputation as a prophet, and possessed the gift of endless transformation, adopting all manner of shapes and disguises in order to escape from those inquiring people who wished to make him prophesy for them. The name Proteus animalcule was changed to Amibe by Bury St. Vincent ; and the present name, Amceba, is the corresponding name in Greek, and means " change.
