The stars in Canis Major and Canis Minor are Sirius and Procyon, respectively, which are sometimes shown on maps as on the edge, or a little outside, of the Milky Way. There are, then, only twelve stars in the Milky Way out of the thirty-nine which are nearest to us in the sky, so that special proximity is not a character...istic of the lucid stars of the Milky Way, and their special brightness cannot therefore be explained as a result of their nearness to us.
There is, then, nothing to suggest any reason for regarding the special brightness of the Milky Way stars as being inherent in themselves, or to explain why the lucid stars shine so brightly in spite of their luminous background, while, on the other hand, the background itself is also specially bright compared with other parts of the sky. This is altogether opposed to our experience of the effects of light.
