The writers against Establishments, in the Christian Reformer, do not hold the doctrine of the apostolical suc- cession in more respect than I do. But they hold, I fear, the other and not less mischievous doctrine, that the ob- jects of civil society are purely physical and external. And the prevailing opinions and practices of the present age, in this country not less than in others, are likely no doubt to countenance them in it.
