To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
To this degenerate, disloyal age Lowly, and all disguised, came the Divine. Like Edom's shepherd, when the blazing thorn Spoke from its tongue of flames, felt they not near The Lord of heaven and earth, nor recognised Beneath this frail exterior a power Omnipotent ? Though curbed with self-restraint. Flashed forth His indignation like the bolt Of summer lightning from the angry sky. For sin to Him was loathsome, vile, and rank, And not as it appeared to blunted sense THE SONG OF INCARNATE LOVE.... 201 Of dull familiarity. Who turned, With eyes of lightning glance, keenly to note The Asian churches, searched He not His age, The chosen people with their hopes and fears. Pretensions, subterfuges, prejudice. Their mercenary spirit, bigotry, Rankness unpruned, intolerance, or pride. And foul corruption, bred of long neglect ? The darkest plots, though tenfold dark and deep. Shrouded in hatred's black obscurity. Were known to Him ; and pityingly He gazed On the blind bond-slaves of iniquity. His eye noted the thronging worshippers, That swept with flowing text-embroidered robes The marble steps, He searched their secret hearts, Ready to recognise the right and good Wherever found, yet swift to reprehend With stern rebuke loud-tongued hypocrisy.
