Yet another illustration of experi- mental knowledge. A little child is at his mother's breast, in her arms. Does he know his own mother ? Assuredly he knows her. How does he know her? Experimentally. His knowledge is not a rational know- 14 THE MYSTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF GOD ledge, he has not the use of reason; neither is it knowledge by faith or hearsay. If one were to tell the child this was his mother he would not understand, but he finds himself in her arms, pressed fondly to her bosom, and he knows.
