To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The Life-giving Cross is but a reproduction of the symbol of the life- giving Tree. The Tree of life, the Book of life, the Word of life, the Agathodsemon, the Serpent of ^Escula- pius, the Sophia, the Logos and the Christ are seen to be but natural and progressive evolutions from the primitive ideas of worship, and are not special revela- tions from God to man. As the Church of Eome, the mother of all our modern churches, adopted the great mass of Pagan ceremonial in her worship, so in her the...ological fancies she embodied much more than was worth retaining in the ancient mythological thought, except for astute purposes of superstition. Eeligion has thus been a gradual growth and not a spasmodic revelation, and the doctrines concerning which churches now differ with such Christian bitterness and strife, are for the most part mere Pagan fancies. This ' Tree and Serpent worship ' shews us plainly to our- selves, and makes it evident beyond the power of con- tradiction, that all our modern Christian doctrine has its roots in Pagan thought, and has not been given by supernatural revelation to man.
