Flowerpot island was once the property of the Chippawa Indians, and until its acquisition by the Department of the Interior in 1930 was held ^ in trust by the Department of Indian Affairs. The island is regarded with 6 considerable superstition by the older Indians of the district, who will rarely land on its shores, and if compelled to do so will leave an offering for the Great Spirit who is supposed to inhabit the place.
