It is often spoken of as the Pauline Gospel, from the fact that it was written by the physician and com- panion of Paul — Luke. The book of Acts, which is the earliest history of the spread of Christianity and the church, is also from the hand of Luke, with some possible ex- ceptions. It was written very soon after his Gospel, somewhere about A. D. 81-82. It was written by the Apostle John in his old age, and while living at Ephesus, about the year a. D. 94-96, Some parts of it seem to be added by a later hand. John saw deeper into the na- ture of Christ's person and the meaning of his work than any other New Testament writer, hence his Gospel is not simply a narrative of the deeds and sayings of Jesus, but an interpretation of them. 3. Group II — the Pauline epistles. The historical books are not the earliest New Testament books.
