80. The place of writing is very uncertain — probably somewhere in Asia Minor. It is often spoken of as the Pauline Gospel, from the fact that it was written by the physician and com- panion of Paul — Luke. The book of Acts, which is the earliest history of the spread of Christianity and the church, is also from the hand of Luke, with some possible ex- ceptions. It was written very soon after his Gospel, somewhere about A. D. 81-82. The Gospel of John is the latest of historical books in the Ne...w Testament; some say the latest of all of the New Testament books. It was written by the Apostle John in his old age, and while living at Ephesus, about the year a. D. 94-96, Some parts of it seem to be added by a later hand. John saw deeper into the na- ture of Christ's person and the meaning of his work than any other New Testament writer, hence his Gospel is not simply a narrative of the deeds and sayings of Jesus, but an interpretation of them.
3. Group II — the Pauline epistles. The historical books are not the earliest New Testament books.
