certain lakes in Germany and elsewhere, especially those whose waters are more or less stagnant, and bordered by marshes, or other water-logged lands. These lakes in course of time become silted up, partly by the vigorous growth of surface-living organisms, especially plankton, and partly by the encroachment of the vegetation of the marshy ground bordering the lake.
