Locke is hard upon infants. He devotes but a few lines to infant Thought in his great work on the Understanding ; but he opines that children are generally spoiled by overmuch "cockering, " and should be taught self-denial. We freely grant that fondling should be consistent, not fitful ; and that it should be given for encouragement and for inspiring love, not to smother ill-humours or to pamper a crooked Will. We would have none of such cocker- ing. Respect for their personal sensibilities, ho...w- SECOND PERIOD: INFANCY. 127 ever, we hold to be in no proper sense deserving that name, and, on the other hand, we plead Locke himself in favour of such tender regard, for he main- tains that judgment necessarily proceeds upon the data present to the mind ; and he alleges that, if all men saw the same things in the same light, all would arrive at the same judgment respecting them. In other words, every mind, whether young or old, educated or uneducated, human or brute, will judge according to the ideas present to his understanding.
