Gossypetin was first isolated in small quantity from the flowers of the ordinary Indian cotton plant, G. Herbaceum (Perkin, Chem. Soc. Trans. , 1899, 75, 826), and has been more completely studied at a later period (ibid. , 1913, 103, 650). For its preparation a concentrated alcoholic extract of the flowers is treated with hot water and the mixture digested when boiling with addition of hydrochloric acid for three hours.
