The importance of the foreground is expressed by the detail ; the middle distance, the meadow land, is less distinct; the elevation produced by the trees in the distance forms the necessary back- ground. Another noteworthy feature is the sense of balance, here so strong as to produce almost a somnolent effect. The scene therefore lends itself well to the mood which Hauptmann manifestly wishes to express.
