The merchant's talk was reasonable; and think- ing the fellow might earn his puchero in my service, in many other ways than by his mere honesty, which, though a useful, is but a nega- tive quality in a servant — I thanked the merchant for his offer ; and early the following morning, was ascending the steep mountains that lie behind Malaga, followed, a few paces behind, by the paragon of honesty who had been recom- mended to me.
