At the mornino; meetino; held Monday, Septem- character ° '^ -^ -^ of the ber 14th, professor Eeusch opened the proceedings with P™f ®'^' a few explanatory statements. The meetings of the Conference were not pnblic, and it was desirable that those present should exercise the requisite discretion in making known what passed. A short account would be ...forwarded to the public press of all that might ap- pear to be of general interest. Shorthand reports were not to be taken, but Dr. DoUinger had instructed him to take notes in German, and Mr. Broade in English. It was important to recollect that none of those present appeared as delegates of any Church or religious body ; the Conference was simply to be a private discussion between individuals, each of whom was responsible solely in his individual capacity for what he advanced. In pursuance of this theory, it was proposed that the presidency of the assembly should not be assigned to any one of the ecclesiastical dignitaries present, but to one who was known simply as a man of learning.
