With all the comforts and pleas- ures with which the French have surrounded them- selves in Cochin-China, however, they cannot change the miserable climate, and they are a pale-faced sickly- looking lot of people who feel their exile keenly. Cochin-China was the first territory taken by the French. It was acquired in the early sixties, and they have been in possession of it ever since. It was then a narrow strip of land lying along the sea-coast, but since that time they have greatly increased ...their terri- SAIGON AND HAIPHONG 215 tory for they have annexed Cambodia, Tonkin, An- nam and, after a difficulty with Siam, they annexed Laos. The last territory acquired by them was Kwang-chan-wan, in the Chinese province of Kwang- tung. Saigon being the capital has always been the most important city; and although it is the largest commercial port in Cochin-China, it is losing its im- portance since Hanoi has been made the capital of all French Indo-China. It was with few regrets I took my departure from Saigon.
