I refused, but when I come to look for other employ, I find that no other ship’ll take me.” Davis sucked in a deep breath through his nostrils, clenching his jaw. The expression on his face was angry, spiteful. “A jailbird, I was, and slaving was me only choice.” I closed my eyes, took a deep breath. I opened them again to find Davis scowling.
