What reading level is The North American Review volume 37 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
21 1 of the community into two transactions : a social compact which precedes all government, and by which the parties agree to form themselves into one political society, and a constitu tional compact which, according to him, springs from, as Mr. Webster calls the Constitution a result of, the social compact. The only difference between them is, that Mr. Calhoun con siders the second transaction a compact as well as the first, while Mr. Webster prefers to describe the first as a compact, and t...he second as the establishment of a fundamental- law. On either view of the proceeding, it is obvious that the acts in question, whether compacts or laws, never change their char acter, but always remain what they were at the time of their conclusion. But although the Ex-Vice-President seems to have mis apprehended, in part, the remarks of Mr. Webster, upon this subject, there is, as we have said, a good deal of force in his objections to the leading point, that the Constitution is not a compact, but a fundamental law.
