This view assumes too much without proof, since the class of stories in which devil-dealing played a part was exceedingly large. The Proterius legend is, indeed, more like no. 20 (q. V. ). Simon Metaphrastes somewhat later than the time of Paulus revised the Greek of Eutychius, and it was from this recension that Gentianus made his translation.
