One day she wrote a letter to a friend living near the Green Mountains of Vermont, in which she re- viewed her work of keeping ocean lights burning, to which thirty-seven years of her life had been devoted, and said : — " Sometimes I think the time is not far distant when I shall climb these lighthouse stairs no more ; then there will be another watcher who will take my place ; but there never will be anybody who can take a greater interest in the light than I have taken.
