The heavy vessels-of-war left the landing of the troops and got into position only a little before sunset, having been delayed an hour by the fouling of the screw of the Minnesota, the leading vessel, commanded by Lanman. I recall no sight during the war more superbly grand than the bombardment of that evening. But soon the shadows darkened into obscurity, and the wooden ships were withdrawn from action.
