But the sus- pension was temporary only ; the dauphin was powerless when M. De Choiseul and Madame de Pompadour thought fit to differ from his views and opinions.
When " Emile " appeared, it was voted a drowsy book. In " Emile " the ladies looked for another Saint-Preux. Few persons were tempted to wade through four volumes of impracticable suggestions on parental duties. But the dauphin appears to have been one of the few. He vehemently de- nounced "Emile" as "//// outrage Jet e aux lots POPULARITY OF '' EMILE'' 259 de la famillc ct dc la socictc, '" and " Emile " had the honour of being publicly burnt on the Place de Greve.
