Yates. He appeared in this case, as in most others, not to un derstand the subject at all. When I drew the ordinance (which passed, a few words excepted, as I originally formed it) I had no idea the States would agree to the sixth article, prohibiting slavery, as only Massachusetts, of the Eastern States, was present, and therefore omitted it in the draft ; but, finding the House favorably disposed on this subject, after we had com pleted the other parts, I moved the article, which was* agreed ...to without opposition. " Mr. Dane is here writing to his colleague from Mas sachusetts, who had been a member of the Committee, about that feature of the Committee s report which would naturally most interest Mr. King. He explains that they " had agreed on some principles, " but that in drawing the report, he had at first omitted this feature, having no idea that Congress would accept it. Afterwards, finding himself mistaken as to the dispo sition of the House, he moved it as an amendment and it was unanimously adopted.
