What reading level is The Pageant of Nature volume 3 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The typical duck bill is broader at the tip than at the base, but the beak of the shoveller is expanded to such an extent that it looks clumsy, disproportionate and burdensome. The forepart of the upper mandible is very much wider than that of the lower one, but immediately behind the broad tip the edges are bent down sharply and deeply, and so render the jaw somewhat like an inverted shovel. It is not by any means, how r ever, used for shovelling. It is really an upturned trough, which receive...s a wide flow of water and con- ducts it by means of its narrowing walls to the middle and rear of the mouth, whence it is expelled through the very fine grille formed by the combined lamella of the upper and lower jaws. By this means the shoveller sucks in and retains large quan- tities of the minute animal and vegetable bodies that swarm everywhere in water. As it is able in this way to obtain a large and constant supply of food, the shoveller has become more strictly a surface feeder than any other species of the group.
