Ada (Payne) Brown was educated at Silliman College, Clinton, La. She has held an unusual position for a woman. After her father lost his sight he taught her his bus...iness as Parish Treasurer and she attended to it for him until his death, when she succeeded him. As it was feared it might not be legal for a woman to hold office, at least in Louisiana, it was arranged for her to hold it in the name of Thomas Sadler, for her father's unexpired term, ending July 5, 1904. At that time a new Parish Board was formed. She was unanimously elected Treasurer in her own name and held the position until her marriage. At the reunion of Confederate Veterans held at Charleston in 1899, she was chosen Chief Maid of Honor for Louisiana by the com- mander of the Louisiana Division, who had been a member of the Pelican Rifles.
