What reading level is The Penance of Magdalena Other Tales of the California Missions book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

It was about noon when he came near, and he could see, as hereconnoitered, that a group of men were talking together in the openspace about which the houses were irregularly placed. That wasexcellent. He crept cautiously near, having some trouble to keep theumbrella out of sight till the psychological moment: and then, holdingit high overhead with one hand and the slippers and extra garments inthe other, in token of amity, he uttered the orthodox Indian greetingwhich answers to our "How d' ye d...o?" and advanced upon them.
They looked up all together: there was a yell that wakened echoes thathad slept for many a year; and in a twinkling the plaza (so to call it)was empty but for himself, and the braves were dodging about behind thehouses in mortal terror of the hideous monster, worse than the whitemen, for he was an unheard-of, polychromatic kind of being, not onlywhite, but red, blue, and yellow as well. It was no doubt the monster ofwhom the priest had warned them, who would appear one day, if they werenot careful of their Christian duties (and they could not say they hadbeen), and destroy them all and burn their village.
