And, at the sound, he felt as if the last 152 THE PENITENT remnant of his courage failed him They could not realize that they had left the Breton land ; that they moved in a hostile world ; that the winter was near; that the weary search for those chance lodgings, the uncertainty of life, increased as time went; they did not suffer the sense of suffocation, the oppression of the mortal darkness that haunted the wood and might well have caused even a happy man to weep !
