It is freely soluble (1 :S.S) in water but practically insoluble in alcohol. Sodii Phosphas Effervescens, — Effervescent Sodium Phosphate, U. S. P. — A mixture of exsiccated sodium phosphate (20), sodium bicarbonate (48), tartaric acid (25), and citric acid (16). This mixture occurs in the form of irregular granules that should be kept in well- stoppered bottles. Sodii Biphosphas. — Sodium Acid Phosphate, N. N. R. — Sodium biphosphate or sodium acid phos- phate should contain not less than 82 p...er cent, of anhydrous sodium dihydrogen phosphate. It occurs as transparent crystals or a white crystalline powder having a saline, somewhat acid taste. It is very solu- ble in water, but insoluble in alcohol. It is best administered in sweetened water like lemonade. It should not be prescribed in solution with hexamethyl- enamine. Magnesii Oxidum. — Magnesium Oxid, U. S. P. — This preparation, which is frequently referred to as "calcined magnesia," occurs in the shops in two forms, the heavy and the light magnesium oxid.
