This method was measurably successful, and in some cases is still considered the best mode of application. But here, again, the necessity of using water to saturate so large a mass of soil proved a serious stumbling block, since it added to the already larger first cost of material, that of labor; to so serious an extent that the method could only be used to save very valuable vineyards. Returning to the direct use of bisulphide of carbon, it was soon discovered that there is a certain measure ...of dilution of the vapor, within which it is practically without any eff'ect on the vine, while still fully accomplishing its mission against the Phylloxera. This measure has now been ascertained by long and elaborate experiment; and by means of simple appliances that can be used by any intelli- gent laborer, the measure and mode of application of the liquid bisulphide to the soil of the vineyards can now be so gauged as to accomplish any desired object, from the mere repression of the insect while the vine is kept in bearing (culture treatment), to the complete extermination of both insect and vine.
