Scott had, in 1805, written a few chapters of " Waver- ley, " and laid them aside. In 1814 he resumed the work and published it anonymously, in July of that year. This was the beginning of that popular series of twenty-seven works, called "The Waverley IS'ovels, " numbering about seventy volumes, which occupied him mainly during the remainder of his life, and by which he acquired both fame and wealth.
