For the resources of language are far from com- mensurate with all that variety of tints, and shades, and degrees, and modifications, which is cognizable by sensible perception. How, indeed, can it be otherwise, when the one are limited, and the other boundless ? It will not suffice, then, with regard to this discerning power, that we should therefore question its existence or its availableness, because we cannot explain the principles by which it de- cides.
