Now we realize if vie are rich, that our survival depends on regulating the rest of the s...ystem, as well as ourselves. However, there is no single ecology that must exist. Our highly artificial environment necessitates both new statements of values and new modes of intervention into the environment. What contemporary American politics has added to this value system is a commitment to equity. There can be a politics of survival and equity; I think there must be.
But, what about our drowning in our ovm wastes, it is asked. There is very little that is terribly poor in our environment. Most of our air is breathable; a substantial amount of our water is drinkable; we arc not yet * A.
