In the five years ending 1829 there were 22 executions in Belgium. But in the next five years, with no execu- tions at all, there were fewer murders committed than previously. Nevertheless, owing to the fears of certain influential parties, capital j)unishment Avas resumed in 1835, though to a far more limited extent than in former years.
