MISCELLANEOUS HINTS. 115 As is well known, it is not considered necessary nowadays for a carpet to fit all over a floor, the so-called "art-squares, " woven in one piece, being preferred by many for both economical and sanitary reasons. They are made in various sizes, and the only thing that need be said is that about 18 inches is a fair width of flooring to allow as a margin. Thus, for a room measuring say 15 feet by 12 feet, the square should be about 12 feet by 9 feet. Of course, these meas-... urements are only approximate, as the "square" carpets are generally obtainable only in certain stock sizes. Occasionally the squares are made up from ordinary widths of carpeting, such as Brussels, Kidders, &c. , when they can be worked to any dimensions desired. The measuring for square or center carpets is a very simple matter ; but when it comes to mak- ing a carpet to fit close or all over a floor, much care is required, and it is rarely that the owner succeeds in giving such measurements as will enable a carpet-planner to cut to an exact fit.
